Seedlist reference numbers
The reference numbers used in the seedlists listed below are neither field numbers nor collection numbers. These numbers are prefixed JJA for Jim and Jenny Archibald Seeds – the business set up to distribute seeds of their own and others collection and cultivation. There followed a six or seven digit reference number, so a typical number would be JJA 745.802 (which refers to a Peonia).
The numbers are alphanumeric based on an alphabetic sequence of genera and species names combined with locations where that plant was collected.
European, West Asian & North African Refs. : 100.000 To 999.999 Acantholimum - Viola
North American Refs. : 1.000.000 To1.999.999 Achlys – Zinnia
South American Refs. : 2.000.000 To 2.999.999 Abutilon – Zephyranthes
Southern African Refs. : 3.000.000 To 3.999.999 Agapanthus – Zantedeschia
East Asia Refs. : 4.000.000 To 4.999.999 Aconitum – Viburnum
Australasian Refs. : 5.000.000 To 5.999.999 Abrotanella – Xyris
Cultivated Hybrids & Selections Refs. : 6.000.000 To 6.999.999 Agapanthus – Trillium
There is no existing link or correlation between JCA field numbers and JJA seedlist numbers. If Jim visited a site six times over the years and collected seed each time, there would be six field numbers contained within a single seedlist number. Likewise, if another collector sent Jim seed from that same site it would be contained in the same seedlist reference number.
