Introduction

It has long been recognised that Scots have occupied many important places in the gardening world. It may not be so well known that, in proportion to population, Scots and those of Scottish descent have occupied an extraordinarily large place in horticulture throughout the world.  Many have helped in the collection and introduction of new genera and species of plants and providing opportunities and encouragement for the plant hunters themselves.

In this section of the SRGC website, we list some of these important Scots.  Some of whom have been honoured by having plants called after them, with an example in each case.  The list is not complete but should give some indication of the important part played by Scots in this field.

At many SRGC meetings, names are referred to in hushed tones, and the newer members of the club may wonder what these people did to be held in such high regard.  Trophies at club shows are given and are in many cases named after people who have long since melted into the shadows, and those who come after and wish to know more about these people can can find that information here.

Details of plant hunters with links to Scotland who travelled abroad to search for plants in their native habitats, and in many cases introduce them to cultivation are described in our separate "Scottish Plant Hunters" pages.

We welcome comments, corrections and additions to the information on these pages - we especially welcome anecdotes and information on other Scots to make these pages as complete a list as possible.
